Ayur Devi

Mother Ayur Devi's Unique Form
With the Trimoorthi trinity looking on in awe, Sri Chitragupta dutifully cataloging the karma of all beings, Sri Yama and His consort worshipping Her, the great Mother presides over the universe.

Seated on a Siddha swan (anna vaahanam) on a base of Siddha lions (simha peetam), the blissful Mother offers a seat (kara peetam) to nine great Siddhas in eight of Her nine divine hands.

Mother Aayur Devi as revealed to the Sathguru,
Guru Mangala Gandharva Venkataraman
by his divine Siddha teacher
Sri La Sri Idiyaapa Siddha Eesar
(Every detail in this Ashram painting
is based on Siddha revelations.)

These nine Siddhas are: Mother's top right hand Gayaasura Maharishi
Mother's second right hand Aani Maandavya Maharishi
Mother's third right hand Atri Maharishi
Mother's fourth right hand Kundalini Maharishi
Mother's top left hand Ahir Puthnya Maharishi
Mother's second left hand Saaramaa Munivar
Mother's third left hand Astheeka Siddha of the Agasthiar divine teacher lineage
Mother's fourth left hand Gaargini Devi and Samvartha Maharishi in a consecrated amrutham pot
Mother's ninth hand Held in the Fear Not (abhaya hastham) posture, the Mother looks after all beings with this protective gesture. The fragrant dhoopam smoke emanating from the Dhoopika Bimba Chakram in the palm of the Mother's hand determines the destiny of every being in the universe.

Ayur Devi Dhyana Sloka - Visualization Hymn
In the worship of the Mother Ayur Devi, we should first chant Her dhyaana sloka meditation hymn and visualize the Mother's divine form in our heart. This meditation/visualization hymn of Mother Ayur Devi is as follows:
Jayaamba Jaya Sarvaani Jaya Gouri Aayur Devi
Namó Namasthé Sivakaama sundari
Namó Namasthé Arunaachalesvari
Namó Maha Gouri Namó Namasthé

Ayur Devi Moola Mantra - ROOT Mantra of the Mother
After chanting the dhyaana sloka and visualizing Mother Ayur Devi, we should chant Her Moola Mantra, the root mantra of the Mother:
Om Sreem Hreem Aim Subaayai Devasenaayai Aayur Devyai Svaaha
(Note: the "Aim" above must be pronounced like the "ime" in "lime".)

Chant this mantra 24, 36, 64, 108, 1008, 10008 or more times. The more the merrier!

Ayur Devi Gayatri Mantra
After chanting the Moola Mantra, chant Mother Ayur Devi's Gayatri mantra:
Om Maha Devyai cha vidhmahé
Paraasakthyai cha dheemahi
thannó Aayur Devyai prachódhayaath

Chant the Gayatri mantra 24, 36, 64, 108, 1008, 10008 or more times. The more the merrier!

After chanting Mother Ayur Devi's Gayatri mantra, chant the Mother's divine name mantras:

If you chant this set of 27 names four times, that will equal one ashtotara (108 names). Repeating this ashtotara ten times will be a sahasranama (1000 names) and that is highly recommended. 10 sahasranamas per day is the royal road to the Mother's grace!

Doing archana (offering flowers at the Mother's lotus feet with the recitation of every name) using gold or yellow colored fragrant flowers is highly recommended. This is the way to get "sarva mangala sowbhagya" - all auspiciousness and prosperity.

Ayur Devi Worship
Every man, woman and child must worship Mother Ayur Devi. There are absolutely no race, religion, nationality or gender restrictions in the worship of the Mother.
If you add vratham (fasting) observances and service to the poor, your worship becomes even more significant.

The Mother can be worshipped using the orthodox kalasam (consecrated pot) approach or just using the picture of the Mother provided in this article. Just as you would apply sandalwood, turmeric and kumkum paste to the kalasam, you should apply the same to the Mother's picture.

Seated in front of the Mother, recite hymns that praise Her. Lalitha Sahasranama (1000 names), Abirami Andhaadi, hymns on Mother Lakshmi are all appropriate. The Mother accepts whatever you recite, as long as you do it in a loving attitude of surrender to Her Divine Will.

If you are not able to do elaborate worship, meditate on the Mother's dhyaana sloka and then recite the Mother's moola mantra and Her Gayatri mantra 24, 36, 64 or 108 times each. But this is a relaxation only for those times when you can't do detailed worship.

Offer dishes (neivedyam) that are of a golden color to the Mother and distribute the same to the poor and the needy. The Mother likes it when we take care of the poor and the needy in Her name. (Hint: Many dishes made of wheat generally take on a golden color.)

Meditate on Mother Saakambari and Mother Ayur Devi before eating anything. To put it simply, do not eat anything without meditating on the Mother's mantras first.

The Vijaya Dasami day is the appearance day of Mother Aayur Devi. Read all about it in this companion article in AUMzine.

Let's thank the Sathguru, Guru Mangala Gandharva Venkataraman and his divine teacher, Sri Idiyaapa Siddha Easa Guru Maharaj for reintroducing us to Mother Aayur Devi and Her worship.
